It may be difficult to envision a day in the life of some needy families before they receive help from NOW Foundation and our supporters. Unlike typical children, who wake up and prepare for school with clean clothes and a hearty breakfast, these children do not have the basic necessities for long term survival.
Instead of a sweet glass of orange juice, needy children in some areas of the world drink water that is teeming with bacteria. Instead of nourishing their bodies, they are actually poisoning it, but they have no alternative. They may have no breakfast at all, and their community may be unable to support a school.
Hunger and lack of clean water invades every area of life for those who are forced into this reality. Poor health and lack of resources keeps individuals in poor health with little way of raising themselves up. Children may spend their morning trekking several miles in order to manually carry home dirty water from a distant supply, or they may simply sit listlessly, lacking the energy for physical activity.
If they have a midday meal, it must be carefully rationed as food is scarce. Mothers almost always feed their children first and go without themselves if they must. The same routine is followed at dinner, the cycle of hopelessness capturing these families firm in its grasp.
NOW hopes to break families out of these depressing lifestyles and give them the education and tools needed for building a better life. With water holes and farming supplies, communities can enjoy new life, self-sufficiency, and good health.
Instead of shivering through the cold of night, they will be clothes warmly. Fresh fruit can be served to get the day off to a good start. Grains and corn can be used to establish a healthy diet that gives children the energy they need to learn and play.
A day in the life of a needy family lacks hope before NOW Foundation steps in, but afterward they can look forward to a bright, new future.
